I missed this newsletter and am so grateful you're back (at whatever pace you chose!) and would love a part 2 😃 I added Edo's Souls and Thirteen Months of Sunrise to my tbr IMMEDIATELY. I don't know if I'm in the headspace for The Book of Disappearance but taking note of that too. I didn't like Mother of Strangers (for the reasons Ilham articulated) but I do want to read her other book as well
That is so lovely to hear, thank you! I’m so happy to hear those books have made your list- I’d love to hear what you make of them if/when you read them. I think you’ll find The Book of Disappearance worthwhile when you do decide to read it but I also completely understand the importance of getting the timing right.
I haven’t read any of these books but they all sound interesting. I got my eye on Dogs at the Perimeter also because I am reading a book set in Vietnam rn and they keep on talking about the Cambodian border.
It’s called Build Your House Around My Body by Violet Kupersmith. Not sure if you’ve heard about it but it’s part Vietnamese historical and folklore story but also part supernatural story. It’s fun. I love it. And yes I recommend it. I just finished it today and actually the Cambodian border thing was just a little part of the story. I thought it might lead to something but it didn’t lol. But the book was really good.
Yes I know the one! I haven’t read it but I remember really liking the sound of it when it was first published. Definitely taking note of the recommendation and popping it back on the list!
Loved reading this - added so much to my never ending list! But particularly would love to read The Book of Disappearance - heard a few good things about this one and the concept is so interesting. And of course Edo's Souls as well - will have to track down a copy.
Also looking forward to your thoughts on the Granada trilogy! I hadn't heard of it before but was so intrigued after seeing it on your stories the other day.
I also couldn't quite click enough with 'Do Not Say We Have Nothing'!! I found it really confusing? I am really intrigued in the success of giving Thien's writing another go - and I have to say I think I might follow suit! I wanted to like DNSWHN because the concept was brilliant. Dogs sounds equally impactful - just how I like it. I really enjoyed reading your review of Edo's Souls, it is a novel I bought a copy of recently because of a goal to read more translated books from Africa. This has spurred me to read it very soon.
The Forbidden Notebook sounds wonderful! While reading I was thinking 'this feels like Ginzburg' so to see you draw that comparison fills me with great excitement. Adding it to the TBR.
I chuckled at your Prophet Song comment - I would agree it seems someone familiar discussing these horrors makes people pay attention. It is a forever shame they don't pay attention before that - but at least PS exists to open those eyes! I am intrigued to read.
A really great selection of books - thank you Tasnim! This collection of reads is so up my alley I can't even express how much I enjoyed reading this and appreciate all the recommendations. October has not been an inspiring reading month for me (I read a collection of dull to bad books very close together - reviewing them for this Friday has felt a bit painful) so this is bringing the thrill back into reading for me rn!!! A million thank yous xox
How lovely to receive thank you Tasnim

Ooooh interesting! Can I ask what the book is and whether or not you’d recommend it so far?

The title is lovely right. the cover is cute and the chapter headers have cute little icons/drawings that gives an idea of the chapter.
